Pichhwai also known Pichwai, Pichhavai, Pichhvai, Pechhavai and many more. Its literal meaning is ‘that which hangs from the back’, from the Sanskrit words “Pichh” means back and “wais” means hanging.
Pichhwai paintings are large devotional Hindu painted pictures, normally on cloth, which portray Hindu God Krishna. A traditional art form that emerged in the 17th Century at the Nathdwara temple in Rajasthan.
Popular themes include Lord Krishna as Shrinathji, the Ras Leela of Krishna and the Gopis, Radha – Krishna , cows and lotus blossoms. Other popular themes include depiction of festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Janmashtami, Gopashtami, Nand Mahotsav, Sharad Purnima, Annakoot or Govardhan Puja
